Big Brothers Mentoring

Big Brothers Mentoring matches adult volunteers over the age of 18 with children between the ages of six and sixteen. Matches spend time together for 2-4 hours on a regular basis. We recommend weekly outings; however, we want to work around our volunteer's schedules.

You can help a child succeed while feeling good about yourself! Mentoring is a powerful way of lending support to a young person just by hanging out! You can teach skills, listen to their perspectives, and create a sense of belonging. You can help a child or youth develop confidence, self-esteem and social skills to be a productive member of society.

There are a handful of steps to complete the enrollment process and consist of:

1. Complete a Volunteer Application, including a Police Information Check and Child Welfare Intervention Record Check.

2. Participate in an Applicant Interview. We want to make the best match possible! By noting your stated preferences, activities you enjoy, your background, personality, etc. we carefully create a compatible match.

3. Attend  Pre-Match Training and Agency Orientation where you will learn all you need to know about your role as a mentor.

The program strives to do the following:

  • provide a role model and a friend for boys and young men.
  • promote the importance of staying in school and healthy relationships with family and peers.
  • instill trust and self-confidence in order to make healthy decisions.
  • encourage leadership skills and independent thinking.
  • and above all, make a difference while having fun.

Testimonial

I have been matched with my Little for three years now and the experience has been thoroughly rewarding. I have seen him grow in so many ways! His has improved academically, developed a healthy social life and is also holding down a part time job. I feel as though I have made a lifelong connection with him. Throughout our time together, the staff have been a source of support which has been very helpful. I would strongly recommend to anyone who is looking for the opportunity to change a young person's life to get involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Medicine Hat & District.
