Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

Many of us were lucky enough to have had a mentor step into our lives during our formative years – at that time when we needed them most. A parent. A teacher. A relative. Whomever, it was someone who treated us with respect and in turn earned ours. Who valued our ideas, included us, and encouraged us. Who taught us that doing good is every bit as important as doing well. And who gave us the courage to make tough decisions, the self-esteem to make smart choices and the confidence to be true to ourselves.

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds

Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds matches at least two female adults with a group of Grade 6 – 8 girls for 7 weeks, to address topics such as physical activity, healthy eating choices, self-esteem and relationships.

The program is designed for girls ages 12-14, with each session lasting 2 to 2.5 hours a piece, and strives to do the following:

  • create appreciation for the benefits of an active, healthy lifestyle
  • build understanding of what constitutes healthy eating habits and the risks associated with eating disorders
  • promote the importance of positive mental activity and regular physical exercise
  • encourage awareness of core values, personal interests, strengths and attributes
  • support the development of leadership and life skills
  • offer guidance in establishing and maintaining friendships
  • and above all, make a difference.

Earlier this year, I had was privileged enough to be a mentor in the Go Girls! Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program through Big Brothers Big Sisters. During that time, myself and a friend of mine mentored eight preteen girls who we got to know quite well. Being with these girls was always a highlight of my week! We talked about self-image and how it is important to us, as well as how it is important to live a healthy lifestyle. These girls were very responsive about what we were discussing and always wanted to have more in depth conversations. Not only do I feel that this program had a benefit for these girls, but I feel as though it was a benefit to myself as well. It felt so good to be considered a role model in these girls’ lives because I had many great mentors when I was growing up and I feel that everyone should be given that opportunity.
